Action Express Racing wins the 2010 Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona
In the motor
sports underdog story of the year, a team that made it’s first public
appearance in December 2009 has won the Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona. Action
Express Racing defeated perennial favorites Brumos Porsche and Ganassi Racing,
with a well used Riley chassis running a bastardized privateer motor that began
life in a Porsche Cayenne. Since Porsche neither builds the motor nor sanctions
it for racing, they will not claim the win as a victory for Porsche.
Action
Express choose the privately-developed and privately-built Porsche V8 (built by
Lozano Brothers Racing/New Braunfels TX), taken from the Cayenne SUV. Rather
than opt for Porsche’s traditional flat-6 engine that won the 2009 Rolex 24,
and like their choice of drivers, the team went a different route to achieve
success.
Drivers Joao
Barbosa, Terry Borcheller, Ryan Dalziel and Mike Rockenfeller led 316 of 755
laps and crossed the finish line fifty two seconds ahead of their closest
competitor, the Ganassi BMW Riley driven by Scott Pruett. This year’s race
featured plenty of drama, including a start under yellow for rain and the early
retirement of the heavily favored second Ganassi BMW Riley, which led 144 laps
before going out with a blown motor.
"What can I say? I'm out of words,"
Barbosa said. "The teammates, the crew, they did a great job. Action
Express rocks and it's going to keep going through the year."
The group was formed in the offseason after Brumos
Racing cut back to a one-car team. That prompted longtime Brumos affiliate Bob
Johnson to assemble Action Express Racing, bringing some crew and drivers over.
"This is amazing," Johnson said minutes
before the finish. "I can't even begin to describe it."
